So, you’re looking to get into the Digital Marketing industry? You have probably heard of the term and are wondering what it takes to get your foot in the door in this industry. Not only are there many career opportunities in Digital Marketing, but there are also many ways to upskill yourself while broadening your knowledge.
Getting into any industry can be quite daunting whether you have experience or not and the Digital Marketing field is no exception. Luckily, there are ways for you to gain experience while you decide which activities you are drawn to within the industry. Thankfully, you do not have to have a degree in Marketing to get your foot in the door.
We have put together a list of 5 things you can do to get into Digital Marketing.
- Develop Your Personal Brand and Online presence
Creating an online presence is the first step towards your Digital Marketing career as the internet is the primary channel on which this industry is built. This is something that Matthew McGregor, our Business Development Executive knows well. He started his career as a Social Media Intern and has since transitioned within our company to explore the sales side of Digital Marketing.
In his introduction to social media, he had to create a presence for clients and then later for himself and while doing this, was exposed to the power of a digital footprint and how it can be used to grow brands and businesses online. This is just one example of the dynamism and creativity that this industry affords.
- Learn Skills & Trends
As a result of how fast-moving the Digital Marketing industry is, it is always a good idea to stay ahead of the pack by constantly learning new skills and keeping an eye on trends.
Tech giants like Google and Facebook offer free online training to get you up to speed in this dynamic and ever-changing industry. Not only will you be conceptualizing newer, fresher ideas, you will also inevitably be positioning yourself to secure future employment opportunities.
Just ask Chelsea Arendse, our social media community manager. She started her career in Digital Marketing through blogging! Blogging was trending at the time Chelsea caught wind of it and she took the initiative to dive straight in.
She was so curious about blogging that she took the initiative to launch a website to blog as a hobby which has since turned her into an influencer who has worked with interesting brands and clients.
In her pursuit of blogging, Chelsea has developed copywriting, editing, marketing, pricing, and technical skills like CMS, as well as being a great addition for us as Deeply Digital
- Use Your Creativity
Digital Marketing is not only dynamic, but it is also fun and allows you to be creative in a lot of different ways. David van Vuuren, our Content Executive knows this well.
As a member of a popular South African band, he uses his writing, marketing, and promotional skills for his bands and Digital Marketing content.
Not only does he align with the methods and systems that are standardized for certain clients, he always adds a personal flair to projects- making them uniquely creative. This is just a testament to the fact that the more creative you are, the better you can apply yourself at your dream job.
- Get interested
Digital marketing intersects many different industries and it is, therefore, important to ensure that you know what the lay of the land looks like.
This means that it is important to find and study certain case studies for interesting insights or methodologies you can use in our own exploration of the industry.
Brad Mitchell, our Digital Marketing Executive has used this strategy to move from a traditional role to the purely digital role he enjoys at Deeply now. As a former salesperson, he has always kept his finger on the pulse in the Digital Marketing world and that has since served him well.
- Create a winning CV
Kristen Clague, our Head of Strategy has had an interesting journey which started at a traditional media advertising agency.
She took the initiative to help clients with small digital tasks that weren’t offered at her previous agency which turned into helping friends in the entertainment industry manage their social media presence to gain experience.
This ultimately led to her fulfilling a role at a more digitally focused agency as a content strategist and social media manager. She worked her way into the industry through studying it further, helping friends and pushing to be involved where opportunities arose.
This kind of experience, combined with your qualifications will help you fill out your CV. One that shows your wide range of skills, making you more employable.
